Kenya to open a consulate in Haiti next year

Haiti

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced that Kenya will open a consulate in Haiti next year.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mudavadi revealed that Kenya will open another consulate in Guangzhou, China, as well.

Moreover Kenya will soon add a consulate to its embassy in Beijing, though the reasoning behind this decision has not been disclosed.

This move comes amid the fact that approximately 4,000 Kenyan students are currently enrolled in universities across China.

This announcement follows the normalization of diplomatic ties between Kenya and Haiti, which occurred 15 months ago.

In September 2023, Kenya and Haiti established diplomatic relations, with a commitment to posting ambassadors in both states.

In a joint statement signed by ousted Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry and then Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, the two countries announced their eagerness to strengthen the ties of friendship for mutual benefit and in pursuit of common interests.

The establishment of diplomatic relations came ahead of Kenya sending police officers to Haiti to help maintain peace in the troubled Caribbean nation.
