Former Citizen TV Journalist Kimani Mbugua Returns to Rehab

Former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has been admitted again to Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital for further mental health treatment. This comes after a public drama involving his father and digital content creator Oga Obinna, which drew the attention of Mike Sonko.  Kimani was taken to the mental health facility in Nairobi by his father, accompanied by two men and Obinna\’s media crew.  A video shared on Obinna’s platform, Kimani’s father explained their intentions for Kimani’s treatment.  \”We have brought him here so that he can receive first aid. A toxicology test will also be conducted to determine if substances he used impacted his condition. After this, the doctor will examine him to assess his mental state, and we will proceed with the rest of the process,” his father said. The former journalist shared that he was feeling energised despite the circumstances. Moreover, Kimani\’s father apologised to Sonko for his recent actions of abandoning his son when he needed him the most. \”Let us first rescue him. To Mike Sonko, thank you very much for what you put across. We are taking it as advice from an elder brother for us to come together and work well. We would like to even take him out of the country, and if you want to come and take Kimani out of the country, you can. I know you love him very much. For me, where I have gone wrong as a father, I say sorry. Kimani is my blood; I will never let him go. I will be happy if he gets well, and I will let him come and work for you.\” The father did not forget to express his gratitude to Obinna and his team for promptly picking up Kimani and taking him to the facility for treatment. Kimani’s return to rehab comes after Sonko publicly criticised Obinna and Kimani’s father for engaging in public accusations, which he claimed were harmful to Kimani’s recovery. Previously, Kimani was admitted at Mombasa Women’s Hospital where he was released in December 2024.

William Ruto\’s Govt Defunds State Corporations With Health Bodies Most Affected

Following the Cabinet meeting held at the Kakamega State Lodge under the leadership of President Ruto, the Cabinet approved the merging of some 42 state-owned enterprises. This resulted in cutting the number to 20, nine dissolved, and 16 others divested in a move meant to cut costs and boost efficiency. This move came following an assessment done by the Ministry of Treasury on 271 State Corporations under the stewardship of Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.  However, those that had been earlier earmarked for privatisation will not be affected by the merger decision. Among the proposed mergers are the Higher Education Loans Board and the University Fund, and the Kenya Tourism Board with the Tourism Research Institute. Other key mergers include the Export Processing Zones Authority with the Special Economic Zones Authority and the Kenya Water Towers Agency with the Agricultural Development Corporation. The nine entities set for dissolution are the President\’s Award, Kenya Nuclear Power and Energy Agency, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, and the Kenya Film Classification Board. Moreover the sixteen entities with outdated mandates or roles that can be fulfilled by the private sector will either be divested or dissolved. These include the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya, and Kenya Post Office Savings Bank. According to the Cabinet, this decisions regarding mergers, restructuring, and operational adjustments were driven by fiscal pressures stemming from constrained government resources. \’\’These reforms have been necessitated by increasing fiscal pressures arising from constrained government resources, the demand for high-quality public services, and the growing public debt burden. Many State Corporations have struggled to meet their contractual and statutory obligations, leading to an accumulation of pending bills amounting to KSh94.4 billion as of March 31, 2024.\’\’

Students Storm Principal\’s Home and Damage Car Over Poor KCSE Grades

Teremi High School in Bungoma County was indefinitely closed on Tuesday, January 21, following student unrest that took place on Monday night. Reports indicated that the strike was fueled by declining performance in the KCSE examination since a new principal joined the school about four years ago. Expressing their frustrations, they stormed the principal\’s home damaging his property including a house and vehicle. Images shared on social media showed the badly damaged vehicle with the windscreen and glass windows completely crashed. His house moreover showed evidence of being stoned with all the window panes broken. It is alleged that the principal escaped an actual physical attack when police officers quelled the strike by firing in the air and dispersing the rowdy students. In the 2024 KCSE examination, the school scored a mean grade of C (6.0618) recording only one A grade out of 651 students who sat for the exam. Although 213 of the students achieved the minimum university entry grade of C+ (plus), the students did not relent in their attack. A total of 36 candidates were awarded a Y in the examination further fueling the students\’ frustration. The issue of the students being awarded Y  is raising questions since Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) awards Y grades to students whose results have been cancelled due to exam irregularities. A week ago, it was reported that parents stormed the school seeking answers over a large number of Y grades.

US President Donald Trump has recently announced he is withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization on his first day back in the White House. President Trump has long been critical of the United Nations’ health agency, and his administration formally began a withdrawal from the WHO in July 2020. However, four years ago, former President Joe Biden halted the US’ exit from the body tasked with coordinating the international response to health emergencies in one of his first actions after taking over the White House. Point to note; it takes a year to fully withdraw from the body, and there is an obligation for the US to continue funding it for a year. Trump has also ordered an end to certain policies aimed at promoting racial equity and protecting rights for LGBTQ+ people. This he ordered on Monday 20th January 2025 as soon as he became the President of the United States of America. According to Trump, there will only be recognition of only two sexes, male and female in the US. ‘We will forge a society that is color blind and merit-based……As of today. it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”

MPs Condemn Pastor Ng\’ang\’a\’s Controversial Remarks on Rape

The controversial remarks made by city preacher Pastor James Maina Ng\’ang\’a has gone viral on social media and the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association has condemned the statements. In a statement issued recently by KEWOPA chairperson Lilian Sankaire, the Association condemned the remarks describing them as harmful and insensitive.  \’\’KEWOPA condemns in the strongest terms the recent remarks by Pastor Ng\’ang\’a trivializing rape and demeaning women. As a society, we must uphold the dignity and respect of all individuals, especially at a time when gender-based violence (GBV) is on the rise in Kenya.Such statements are not only harmful and insensitive but also undermine the ongoing fight against GBV and its devastating impact on survivors and their families,\’\’  KEWOPA stated. The parliamentary group further demanded that Pastor Ng\’ang\’a should issue a public apology following his controversial remarks on women\’s issues. \’\’KEWOPA calls on Pastor Ng\’ang\’a to issue an unreserved apology to survivors of sexual violence and the women of Kenya. We also urge all leaders, organizations, and communities to stand united in the fight against GBV by promoting awareness, supporting survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable,\’\’ it added.   According to the association, it was wrong for the man of God to make the comments knowing that rape is a heinous crime that leaves survivors with lifelong emotional and physical impacts.   \’\’Rape is not a subject for jest or mockery. It is a heinous crime that leaves survivors with lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical scars. Such reckless and insensitive statements not only undermine the pain of survivors but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes that normalize GBV in our communities,\’\’ KEWOPA stated. The pastor made unprintable remarks linking certain types of dressing and makeup by women to rape. The clip has since gone viral on social media, with Kenyans expressing horror at the preacher over his callousness and others questioning if he is really a man of God.
