He was the longest-lived President in US history.
The 39th United States President celebrated his 100th birthday in October 2024.
Jimmy Carter became the President of the United States in January 1977 after defeating the incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 elections.
He served a single term from 1977 to 1981 where he lost a reelection to Ronald Reegan.
Despite being known as peacemaker, His Presidency is largely remembered as unfulfilled four years shaken by blows to America’s economy and standing overseas.
He is also remembered for being a globetrotting elder Statesman and human rights pioneer during an indefatigable 43-year ‘retirement’.
President Joe Biden has also mourned Carter.
He said in a statement that America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian as well as man of great character and courage, hope and optimism.
He saved, lifted and changed the lives of people across the globe. I declare January 9 a National Day for mourning and call on people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.
He added.
