The former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu has been arrested by the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

According to Waititu’s lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, the former governor was going about his business on the Eastern Bypasss when he was unexpectedly arrested.

”My client has been arrested by officers from the DCI and we are currently at the DCI headquarters here in Nairobi.’’

The former governor is currently being detained at DCI headquarters which is located along Kiambu Road accompanied by his lawyer.

His lawyer has further disclosed that Waititu has been accused of altering hate speech during an event in Ruiru in his mother tongue language.

‘’They have informed us that they arrested him because of an utterance of hate speech that they alleged he made in his native Kikuyu language.’’

Ndegwa has also claimed that the arrest had nothing to do with the allegations stating that the officers were acting on ill motives meant to curtail the freedom of expression.

‘’I have instructed him to remain silent because the claims are not valid and it seems this is a move to curtail the freedom of expression for my client as enshrined in the constitution.’’

He concluded by confirming that they are following up on the matter with the detectives to have Waititu released.

”We have asked them to admit him on bail or bond and we are still here awaiting further directions.”
