Michael Muturi Addresses Allegations That He Mismanaged Makanga Bae’s burial Funds

The family of the late Gerald Mwangi who was mostly known as Makanga Bae had alleged that the  money contributed by well-wishers after the death of their kin had been mismanaged. The allegation came during the burial of the deceased and the family accused Michael Muturi for the mismanagement of the funds. Speaking in an interview with Jeff Kuria, Michael Muturi who is alleged to have mismanaged the funds has given his side of the story and started by explaining how everything started and how he was involved with the contributed funds. “He had an accident on Waiyaki Way, he was thrown out of the car after their car was hit by another. He was hospitalized at KNH, I have to attend to all accidents involving our vehicles. He was in ICU. He was bleeding internally and needed 7 pints of blood. I mobilized people and they came. The doctor also said money was needed to buy some medications to stop clotting before he went into surgery. We raised 19K, we made a challenge where people would contribute sh100 a day. His leg had started rotting so the toxins had risen to his body. I would go visit him every lunch hour and at 4:00 PM. On the day he died his mum and I were at the hospital. He died at around 11:00 PM, that night.” According to him, after the death of Makanga Bae, the bill was released but the family did not have money. “The bill came to 600K plus., We paid 350K bill, We remained with a bill of over 212K. We later paid sh112K without the parents.  Muturi further noted that after the postmortem the family distanced themselves from Makanga Bae’s alleged wife. ‘ The money needed was Sh117K for postmortem, and mortuary transfer among other things. We ended up paying Sh 73,000 after being given a discount. Makanga Bae’s mum ended up going with the receipt. The money by out touts came to Sh63,000. We decided to send the cash to Makanga Bae’s wife. The company also called me and I sent the name of Makanga Bae’s mum. The company provides money for a casket. We promised to cater for food and water.” He also disclosed that there was another group that had allegedly contributed Sh 120,000 which was sent to the family. Talking on  the allegation that he mismanaged the funds, Muturi denied mismanaging any money adding that the family already had disagreements on where Makanga Bae would be buried ‘They said they won’t dress him in clothes we had bought. I only went to the morgue, once his body left I went back as I had done my job. I have been deducted Sh 63,000 and am at peace.”

Activist Hussein Khalid Arrested while leading a group of activists to hold an event at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid was arrested while leading a group of activists to hold an event at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park. The activist was addressing the press at the time of the arrest after police cordoned off the entrance to the venue from hundreds of youth who were slowly gathering to enter the venue.  The arrest came moments after police lobbed teargas canisters at a group of youth who had assembled within Nairobi Central Business District with plans to march to Uhuru Park Grounds. Earlier, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja had warned individuals who were planning to converge at the park to honour victims of police brutality who died during the anti-government protests in Nairobi and other parts of the country. ‘’Uhuru Park has been open and remains open to the public every day. Every Kenyan is allowed to come and is welcome to enjoy their Park. You can also book for events. A public park is, however, not available to be reserved for exclusive use during a public holiday. Other Kenyans will also want to enjoy it. It can be reserved on any other day. Come on a one-on-one basis, no need for seeking permissions.’’ This came after some citizen groups had gone to concerned authorities to seek permission to use the venue for an event scheduled to run alongside Mashujaa Day celebrations that were being held in Kwale County.   Boniface Mwangi, who is also an activist, had earlier reported that police had blocked them from holding their event at the park. ‘’We have been stopped from accessing Uhuru Park. He has deployed police officers, and l was told we are not allowed in there. I was with my wife and children. The police officers, and county employees manning the gate said they’re simply following orders.’’ There were plans to hold a mega Mashujaa event so as to honour those who died during the anti finance bill earlier this year.

High Court Forced To Adjourn The Adani Case Hearing After Kenyans Stormed The Virtual Courtroom

High Court judge Andrew Mwammunye halts a court hearing related to the Adani deal. This comes after Kenyans stormed the virtual courtroom. The High Court has recently been forced to adjourn its hearing of a case involving Adani Group Limited after Kenyans stormed the virtual courtroom, disrupting the session. Several Kenyans allegedly sneaked into the virtual court proceedings after accessing details of the online court session and began shouting “Adani Must Go! JKIA is not for sale,” prompting the judge to intervene. Despite Justice Andrew Mwamunye’s attempts to call the session into order, his efforts hit the rocks, forcing him to stop the proceedings. The judge has however announced that an appropriate time to reconvene would be announced in due course.  “I understand your protests and I am unable to deliver this judgment now,”  A petition had been filed by activist Tony Gachoka and a group of lawyers where the National Treasury and Adani are the respondent According to the petition, Tony Gachoka challenged the government’s decision to lease the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the Indian conglomerate. In his suit, Gachoka argued that the Public-Private agreement between President William Ruto’s administration and Adani was reached without adequate public participation.  The petitioners further argued that the country’s main airport was the flagship project of the Kenya Airports Authority and that leasing it to an Indian company owned by a private citizen contravened the law.
