The 53 years old retired marathon champion was found dead near his home in Eldoret.
The former marathon champion Samson Kandie was killed by unknown assailants near his home in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
The former marathon champion was found severely beaten and tied up outside his home.
According to his daughter Vienna Kandie, they discovered Samson’s body after the mother had called him around 7:30 pm and he noted that he was on his way back home yet he never arrived and after calling him hours later, a strange voice on the other end of a phone call directed the family to look for him behind their home’s toilet and that’s where they found the body of the late.
The late Samson Kandie rose to fame for his outstanding performances in marathon races across the world, including the 1999 Berlin Marathon where he set his personal best of 2:08:31.
Kandie’s death has highlighted the vulnerability of athletes who have brought honor to the nation. Many now question why such icons do not receive better protection from the government.
Ezekiel Kemboi is among those who have expressed their anger and frustration at the lack of security for athletes who seems to have become easy targets for criminals.
“We just buried another athlete recently, and now Kandie. Athletes bring pride to this country. If MPs get security, why can’t athletes have the same?”
Investigations into the killing are ongoing.
