Tragedy Strikes as 56 Killed in Guinea Stadium Crash After Disputed Refereeing Decision

56 people have allegedly been killed according to a provisional toll in Southeast Guinea as stated by the Government on Monday 2nd December 2024.

This included children who were reported to be among the dead.

This was after a disputed refereeing decision sparked violence and a crush at a soccer match.

It occurred during the finals of the tournament in honor of Guinea’s military leader Mamady Doumbouya at a Stadium in Nzerekore, one of the nation’s largest cities.

According to the reports from the government, some fans threw stones, triggering panic and crush.

Security forces tried to use tear gas to restore calm after the chaos that followed a dispute penalty.

Videos that escalated from the stadium showed a section of the stadium shouting at the referee before clashes broke as fans poured onto the field.

People could be seen running as they tried to escape from the stadium as many of the jumped the high fence while others were seen lying on the floor in a place which looked like a hospital as crowd gathered nearby, some assisting the wounded.

The government has promised an investigation towards the matter.
