Kenyans in Australia hold demonstrations to condemn Abductions in Kenya

A group of Kenyans in Australia converged to protest against the spate of abductions in a remarkable show of support to their counterparts in Kenya. Taking to the streets, the group marched peacefully as they sent a message to President William Ruto to take action and resolve the current security issues in Kenya. The group was armed with placards and posters bearing the names of all the youth who were reported missing in December, chanting anti-government slogans as they shared messages of encouragement to Kenyans. According to One of the protesters in Australia, Kenyans in the diaspora are equally as irate with the current state of the country, despite living abroad. “We are here to send a message that we are not happy with the abductions, the economy of Kenya and there is forcing of people to do what they do not want to do. We want a change.” Another one added,  “Kenyans in Australia are sad. We worry because we left families there. There is a high rate of unemployment and when they cry, they are shown an iron fist.” The Kenyans in Australia also sent a message to Kenya’s High Commissioner to Australia, Hon. Dr Wilson Kipngetich Arap Kogo, urging him to speak in support of the cause. The peaceful Australia protests came hours after Nelson Amenya called on Kenyans in the diaspora to join forces to send an anti-abduction message to the government. Amenya revealed he was attending a separate one in Paris, France. “Kenyans in the diaspora should also organise #EndAbductionsKE protests across major cities as we did for the Finance Bill. I’m planning one for Paris,” he said.

Former CJ David Maraga Condemns the Abductions cases in Kenya

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has penned a New Year’s message to Kenyans condemning the recent spate of abductions. Through his message the former CJ also called out for the immediate release of the youth who according to him are held unlawfully. “This year has not been easy for many families. The killing, maiming, and abduction of young Kenyans put to serious test our institutions. It demands a moral response. If we are truly a people sworn to the sanctity of life and the dignity of every citizen, then we must stand bold in the truth of our Constitution. I condemn the killing, torture, and abductions and call for the immediate release of the youth still held unlawfully. Our politics must never again be this heartless and uncaring,” Maraga stated. The former CJ has moreover called for increased adherence to the Constitution, noting that it provided clear and defined structures for governance, ethics, and the rule of law in the coming year.  According to Maraga, heeding the law of the land would only come about if basic human values and principles took precedence. “As we usher in the New Year, I call upon all of us to reflect on the promise that we made to ourselves 14 years ago. We defined a clear path for our future. We set down the values of governance, ethics, and standards of excellence as our guiding light. However, these values and principles can only be realised when they become true to you and me when fairness and humility are the first things we meet at the doors of our offices when truth and justice are the ink that runs through our pens at work when human dignity and responsibility are the forces that fuel our work,” Maraga stated.   Maraga urged the government to ensure that the coming year of 2025 would be a year of accountability after a tumultuous 2024 challenging them to follow the Constitution, the rule of law and justice.      His message came as the country continues to record cases of alleged abductions and enforced disappearances.  The abductions are said to be due to increased criticism of President Ruto’s government as Kenyans demand for better leadership and service delivery.

DPP gives police IG 3 days to report on abduction cases

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has recently expressed concern over reports of abductions and forced disappearances in Kenya. Issuing a press statement Sunday night, the DPP highlighted at least five cases of suspected abductions reported in December 2024, with victims still unaccounted for. “It is apparent from the reports that there have been at least five (5) such suspected cases of abduction in December 2024 alone, with the victims said to be Bill Mwangi, Peter Muteti Njeru, Bernard Kavuli, Gideon Kibet aka Kibet Bull, and his brother Ronny Kiplagat, each of whom is yet to be traced after having been picked up by unidentified people in questionable circumstances,” the DPP said. He went on to direct the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite investigations and submit reports within three days for review and potential action. “I have also noted the Press Statements released by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on 25th December 2024, indicating investigations into the various abduction incidents, and the clarification by the Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) on 26th December 2024 on the alleged cases of abductions by the NPS, in which both institutions separately gave an undertaking to investigate the incidents, noting the gravity of the allegations, and the immense public interest that the same has drawn. I have, pursuant to Article 157 (4) of the Constitution, directed both the Inspector General of Police and the IPOA to expedite the investigations touching on reported cases of abductions and alleged forced disappearance of citizens, and forward the resultant files for perusal and action, and/or provide an update on the investigations, within three (3) days from the date hereof,” he added. His statement coincided with an online campaign from Kenyans who were calling for nationwide protests against abductions on Monday, December 30.  Recently, Embakasi East Member of parliament Babu Owino wrote a letter to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula to put security stakeholders in the country including Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen to book. Notably, while addressing the issue, CS Murkomen denied any police involvement in the abductions, stating that anyone arrested by the police ought to be taken to court within 24 hours.

Babu Owino Wants the National Assembly to hold a Special sitting to tackle the issue of Abductions

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has requested a special sitting in the National Assembly to tackle the current  issue of abduction in kenya. The MP wrote a letter addressing the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula on Sunday, December 29. Babu Owino noted that the public was unsettled since the whereabouts of some of the individuals remained unknown to date. According to the MP all the individuals who went missing had one thing in common – they openly criticised the Kenya Kwanza Government at some point. “There is growing public anxiety over the role of state agencies in these abductions, particularly the involvement of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), the Inspector General of Police, and the role of telecommunications companies. In light of these disturbing developments, I request that the National Assembly urgently convene a special sitting before the scheduled vetting of Cabinet nominees.” Babu Owino believes the sitting will offer a platform to bring several key stakeholders in national security to book. He went on to note that the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Ibrahim and the new Cabinet Secretary for Interior Mr Onesmus Murkomen needed to answer pressing questions regarding the state of security in the country. However, Last week IG Kanja openly distanced the country’s security agencies from any wrong-doing in the alleged abductions – sentiments which thoroughly angered Babu Owino, who called for the IG’s resignation. CS Murkomen also denied any police involvement in the abductions, stating that anyone arrested by the police ought to be taken to court within 24 hours.

MP Oscar Sudi threatens to sue Morara Kebaso Over Photo With Kasmuel McOure

Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has threatened to sue activist Morara Kebaso over alleged defamatory remarks. In a demand letter shared by his lawyers, Limo and Njoroge Advocates, the MP accused Kebaso of sharing a photo showing Sudi engaged in conversation with Kasmuel McOure to his 280,000 followers on X account with a caption he considered defamatory. “We act for Hon Oscar Kipchumba Sudi, the sitting Member of Parliament for Kapseret Constituency, whose stellar reputation, earned through years of public service and business acumen, you have maliciously and recklessly defamed through your publication on the X platform (formerly Twitter) dated 22 December 2024 at 11.21 AM,” the law firm stated. The lawyers also indicated that Morara violated the law by defaming Sudi through direct reference and innuendo. The controversy arose from Kebaso’s post on December 22, where he shared images of Sudi alongside artist Kasmuel McOure. According to Sudi through his lawyers, the accompanying text suggested that Sudi was involved in the tragic killing of Gen Z protesters for personal gain during the anti-finance bill demonstrations, sparking significant public reaction due to Kebaso’s large following on X. The law firm went on to issue three demands on behalf of their client to Kebaso, amongst them a written, unconditional, and unreserved apology.  Other demands were an immediate admission of liability and an express undertaking to not publish any defamatory photograph or statements that can be inferred by innuendo referring to Sudi again. “We are going to file a lawsuit in the coming week from Monday, December 30, 2025, to Wednesday January 1, 2025, thereabout, after Kebaso indicated that he would not heed our demands.”
