Babu Owino

Reason Why Babu Owino Skipped DP Gachagua’s Impeachment

Gachagua becomes the first DP to be impeached by MPs since the implementation of the 2010 constitution. Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has broken his silence over the impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Clearing the air on why skipped the process, Babu Owino noted that there are more important things to deal with right now than wasting the whole day discussing Rigathi Gachagua. Among what he termed  to be serious issues are; the Adani deal, new university funding model, social health insurance  fund  ,high cost of living, high taxation, unemployment among others. ‘’How can I waste my precious whole day discussing Rigathi yet we have serious issues like Adani, new university funding model, Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), high cost of living, high taxation, unemployment among others.’’  According to the MP, he will stay away from Parliament chambers if non-issues are being debated, urging that he would only make an appearance when issues of importance are discussed in the house. He further confirmed that he took his time to engage on important issues affecting his constituency during the impeachment debate, pointing out that it was the sole reason for his absence. ”You’ll see me in parliament when these issues are presented but they will not bring them. I was highly engaged with other important and urgent matters affecting my constituents. The speed with which Rigathi was impeached should be the same speed used to solve Kenyans challenges.’’ Babu Owino was among the MPs who skipped the exercise. Others MPs who missed  were Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris and her Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro whose silence in the entire saga baffled Kenyans. Gachagua was yesterday impeached by the National Assembly with 281 members voting in favour of his impeachment.

Via her TikTok account, the actress shared that in the past she had written a letter to former President Uhuru Kenyatta appealing to get help. She went on to ask Kenyans to push the government to take the necessary action. The brother was abducted alongside his cousin in Mogadishu. Wanjiku went on narrating the heartbreak she encountered after receiving a call from her brother several years down the line. According to her, the brother told her he was being held in captivity. All this while, the brother said he has been in a cell, cuffed and his movements limited.  The last time he had called the family was in 2014, shortly after he had been abducted. ‘’He went missing in January 2014 and in March he called us for a brief moment and shared to us what had happened and since then we have not heard from him.’’ She also narrated how she came to know about the abduction of her brother by highlighting that her father called her frequently asking where she was. Concerned over the tone her father was using, she inquired from her dad what was wrong, who subsequently informed her that her brother had contacted him and requested to speak with her. After which the actress remained standby and the brother then called her and informed her that he had been locked up in a prison, in solitude and unable to communicate with the outside world. ‘’I received a call with a number from Somali and normally guys I don’t receive calls from  unknown numbers but this one I answered and heard a voice that I had not heard for 10 years speaking while sober minded, Shii, it is Kajijo(George), have you forgotten me already? I told him how I can forget you yet there is not a moment, a day or an hour that I don’t think about you.’’  The actress further noted that the call from her brother has been tough on her mentally. The revelation that he has over the years been held in a tiny cell not knowing what day or year it is has particularly been hard on her and their family. The brother, according to her narration, informed her that his abductors had kidnapped him over the move by the Kenyan government to send troops to Somalia in an attempt to restore peace. She has therefore requested President William Ruto to help her family bring back her brother home.
