Hawkers Ready To Protest After Sakaja Enforces CBD Restrictions

Hawkers in Nairobi have declared protests against CBD’s ban that was lifted by Governor Johnson Sakaja. Gachagua had issued a warning against the hawkers on January 6th, 2025, not to hawk within Nairobi CBD and further directed them to sell in the backstreets of the town and lanes within the CBD. The new directive also required the hawkers to hawk only from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm from Monday to Friday. With the new regulations, the hawkers’ association vows to march to city hall to demonstrate against the new regulations, stipulating the right to conduct businesses without restrictions. They have argued that they have families and cannot be expected to leave when they have responsibilities. However, the business community is also against arguing that the overcrowding of hawkers discourages their customers from entering CBD. While stating their argument, they also emphasized that they are not against the hawkers but rather wants their designated business spaces adding that they pay taxes to operate regularly.

Kenyan Comedian Eric Omondi has arrived in Tanzania. He arrived in Tanzania on Saturday 10th June 2024. During his arrival, he was interviewed where he revealed that the journey had been a bit long because they had travelled by bus and passed through Mombasa courtesy of Skyward Express. He conceded that he often travels to Tanzania and therefore considered the country as his home. That is the reason I have come here, on behalf of Skyward and love. Skyward plans to offer valentine trip for three couples to experience the comedy and adventures of Kenya. Eric Omondi stated as he hinted on Maasai Mara. Law Society Of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo and Frankline Wallah Join New Femicide Taskforce

President William Ruto has assigned LSK President Faith Odhiambo and Citizen Tv journalist Franklin Wallah to be part of the 34-member task force that will probe the growth in Gender Based Violence (GBV) and femicide cases. This was announced in gazette notice which was issued on Friday 10th January 2024. The Head of State mentioned that the task force would assess, review and recommend measures that will curb GBV and femicide cases. There are existing gaps in prevention, response, investigations, prosecution, data management and survivor support systems in GBV and femicide cases. Such egregious violations pose a threat to our national security as well as strain the nation’s social fabric.  A part of the Gazette Notice stated. With the new appointment, the Head of the Republic also tasked former Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza to chair the taskforce. Other members included Edna Ngare, Nobert Talam, Linda Musumba, Anthony Nzioki, Anne Ngetich, Wangu Kanja and Gloria Wawira among others. The new task force will review reports of ongoing cases, invite written submissions from the public and work collaboratively with NGAO. The group will also be expected to develop report within 90 days and report to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki through the Gender Principal security. According to reports, the authorities have recorded over 90 femicide cases over the last few months.

Martha Karua Declares Candidacy For 2027 Presidential Election

Narc Party leader Martha Karua has revealed intentions for Presidency in the 2027 general elections. This she said on Friday 10th January 2025 during a burial ceremony in Kianderi, Kirinyaga County. Karua stated that she was no longer going to be anyone’s running mate and confirmed her bid for Presidency.     I want to tell my good former Senator Daniel Karaba that I’m beyond any running mate position, I will be going for the top seat come the next election.  She spoke. Martha Karua also noted that the recent wave of abduction might had been conducted by people believed to be police officers who are supposed to protect the people and therefore warned President William Ruto’s administration government, to allegedly stop the abductions as she noted that the kidnaping and disappearances largely affects young people. The Narc Party Leader had contested for the presidency in 2013 elections who emerged the 6th in the race where Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was elected as the President of Kenya. In 2017, Karua tried to contest for the Kirinyaga Governor’s seat but lost to Anne Waiguru. In 2022, she got victorious as she was picked as Raila Odinga’s running mate of which they lost to President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Murkomen Vows To Tackle Social Media Abuse With Legal Action

The Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) has threatened legal measures against social media misuse by youths. This he said in Uasin Gishu while in the presence of the Head of State. Recently, there was a viral online display of President William Ruto in a coffin claiming that online AI generated images had become an online playground for online users to the government. The CS criticized church leaders and parents to defend the bad behavior by citing an example of a child. There are those making those pictures with our leaders in coffins; I want to ask every parent particularly church leader, to defend this bad behavior. If your child goes to school and another child whom they share the same class sends a picture when your child has been put in a coffin, will you still defend that behavior? CS Murkomen stated. He said that posting such pictures would simply state that ‘I will kill you’ which is wrong as people are clapping for the behavior that has been perpetuated for a long time. We are going to relook at this behavior, and we will make sure we charge all those who are using this social media to threaten others because if we don’t do so, we will not have an orderly country, we must bring order to our country because we want Kenyans to live in a country of order.  Murkomen added. President William Ruto also commented towards the matter condemning political leaders and parents for tolerating online abuses against government officials as well as allegedly inciting the youth.

Moi University Students Face Disruptions As Lectures Launch Fresh Strike

Moi University staff members launch fresh strike adding more stress to students. The strike which began last year August was suspended but it hadn’t been less than a month since. The joint staff unions UASU and KUSU released a joint statement launching their strike on Friday 10th January 2025. Following a meeting of all members of Staff of Moi University, it has been decided that the industrial action commenced last year in August 2024 be resumed with immediate effect.  The notice stated. The immediate strike meant withdrawal of all the services of the employer as stated by UASU and KUSU. This means staff are withdrawing all their services to the employer. This regrettable action is occasioned by failure of the employer to adhere to the Return-to-work Formula signed between the parties.  The notice further stated. The deal which had been signed before included the government’s commitment to fully implement the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) which is valued at Ksh. 9.7 billion and the implementation would occur in three tranches as follows: Ksh 4.3 billion covering nine months up to June 2025 and Ksh. 5.4 billion disbursed in two installments of each Ksh. 2.7 billion. Moi University Lecturers’ on strike again. The only thing certain in Moi University is the constant unending strikes. Nairobi Set To Host Continental Air Cargo Exhibition

US President-elect Donald Trump To Be Sentenced In Hush Money Case

The 45th President and President-elect Donald Trump might be sentenced on Friday in New York hush money case. The Supreme court said in their 54th ruling. Donald Trump was convicted in May for falsifying business records over payment to his lawyer at that time, Lawyer Michael Cohen to reimburse a $130,000 hush money payment mode to adult-film star Stormy Daniels in order to keep her from speaking out about an alleged affair before the 2016 election. According to CNN, high court on Thursday 9th January 2024 rejected Trump’s emergency request to delay the proceeding which could lead to a sentence days before he is to be inaugurated as a President for the second term. Judge’s ruling the case included Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh said they would have granted Trump’s request, but Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the court’s three liberals to side against the President-elect. Judge Juan Merchan had ordered the sentencing in the case for Friday morning but signaled that Trump would face neither penalties nor prison time. The sentence hearing is scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m. where Trump will appear virtually according to sources.

TikTok To Cease Operations In The Us By January 19 Amid Regulatory Pressure

Popular social media platform TikTok has announced that it will cease it might cease its operation in the United States. TikTok had challenged a rule that was passed last year ordering the company to split from its Chinese owner or be blocked from the US by January 19th. The US government argued that TikTok could be used by China as a tool for spying and political manipulation. TikTok on the other hand declined the claims arguing that it had been fairly targeted and stated that the measure violated the free speech of some 170 million American users. The lower courts sided with the government, but President-elect Donald Trump intervened and weighed on the dispute who therefore asked for the enforcement of the law to be paused to grant him time to come up with a deal. The law against TikTok had been passed last year by the Congress with the support from both the democratic and republican parties. TikTok has already been banned in other countries such as India. It will also face a possible ban by the government of US. With the face of the possible ban, a decision by the Supreme court could be made anytime within the coming days.
