TikTok which has 170 million users in the United States might be banned in the US by January 19th. The threats to ban the popular platform has made the United States American content creators to flee to another Chinese social media app known as RedNote. RedNote escalated to the top of the Apple App Store downloads on Monday 13th January 2024 as users flocked to its Instagram-meets-Pinterest style layout. Users of RedNote welcomed their new users posting videos explaining to the how to use the app with hashtags like #TikTok refugees which have gone viral across the app. The US government passed a law last year that forced TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance to either sell its popular platform or shut it down. This was simply because the US government alleged that TikTok allows Beijing to collect data and spy on users and is a method to spread propaganda. Chana and ByteDance reportedly denied the claims. The ban might be effected on Sunday. RedNote acts as Pinterest, and it’s been described as ‘China’s Instagram’ but checks a couple of important boxes for creators who are worried they’ll lose followers should the looming TikTok ban hit on January 19th. The app has also built-in shopping features similar to the TikTok shop that have become a boon for creators looking to set up a storefront, stemming from the app’s early days as a social shopping app focused on fashion.

TikTok To Cease Operations In The Us By January 19 Amid Regulatory Pressure

Popular social media platform TikTok has announced that it will cease it might cease its operation in the United States. TikTok had challenged a rule that was passed last year ordering the company to split from its Chinese owner or be blocked from the US by January 19th. The US government argued that TikTok could be used by China as a tool for spying and political manipulation. TikTok on the other hand declined the claims arguing that it had been fairly targeted and stated that the measure violated the free speech of some 170 million American users. The lower courts sided with the government, but President-elect Donald Trump intervened and weighed on the dispute who therefore asked for the enforcement of the law to be paused to grant him time to come up with a deal. The law against TikTok had been passed last year by the Congress with the support from both the democratic and republican parties. TikTok has already been banned in other countries such as India. It will also face a possible ban by the government of US. With the face of the possible ban, a decision by the Supreme court could be made anytime within the coming days.

President-elect Donald Trump has requested the U.S Supreme Court to pause the enactment of a law that would ban Popular social media App TikTok or force its sale. The new law would require TikTok’s owner ByteDance to sell the App to an American company or face a ban. The President-elect had previously met with the TikTok CEO in December hours after he expressed, he had a soft spot for the app and that he was in favor of allowing TikTok to keep operating in the United States of America for a little while. He added that he had received billion views on the social media platform during his Presidential campaign. Google has countered US call to sell its chrome browser. This they did on Friday 20th December 2024. Google filed a proposed order banning the internet giant from requiring favorable distribution or treatment of its software on mobile devices as a condition of licensing popular apps like chrome. In November, the US Government had asked a judge to order the dismount of google by selling its widely used chrome browser in a major antitrust crackdown on the company. Nothing in this final judgement shall otherwise prohibit Google from providing consideration to a mobile device manufacturer or wireless carrier with respect to any Google product or service in exchange for such entity’s distribution, placement on any access point, promotion or licensing of that Google product or service.  The proposed order specified. Google is expected to appeal the ruling leaving the final say to the Supreme Court. The case could be upended by the arrival of President-elect Donald Trump to the White House in January since his administration will likely replace the current team in charge of the Justice Department’s antitrust division.
