The family of a Kenya Defence Forces soldier who is reportedly held captive by Al-Shabaab militants for nine years, is calling on the government to assist in the release of their relative. Ibrahim went viral after a widely shared video showed him asking the Kenyan government for help to return home.  Ibrahim, dressed in a KDF uniform, said in the video that he has been held hostage by Al Shabaab in Somalia for nearly nine years. \”I am a Kenyan soldier. I joined the army in 1986. The Al-Shabaab captured me on January 15, 2016, during the Al-Shabaab raid at the KDF camp in El Adde,\” Ibrahim said. Responding to the video, his family narrated the pain they have endured for years, thinking that their long-lost kin is already dead. His daughter Kadra Abdullahi speaking to Citizen TV revealed that she received a call from an unfamiliar number in Somalia about a month before the video of her father went viral. Kadra said the caller identified himself as her long-lost father, leaving her shocked and confused as she struggled to believe the revelation.  \”We didn\’t have proof of him. I asked him to ask the guys holding him to send us a photo or a video of him so we could start a journey of how to help him. He then said that they would reach me through their media link,\” Kadra said.  According to the soldier\’s daughter, they had already come to terms with his death after the KDF issued a death certificate confirming it.  \”We did the burial procedures for my dad because we knew he was no more,\” she said. Abdullahi Issa Ibrahim was among the soldiers captured by militants during the deadly attack on the Kenyan-run AMISOM army base in El-Adde on January 15, 2016. The family now insists that those holding him hostage only wish to communicate with the Kenyan government in order to release him.

Dutch Government confirms they will honour Ruto’s invite Despite Receiving 300 Emails from Kenyans

The Dutch government has issued a response after at least 300 emails from disgruntled Kenyans were sent requesting the cancellation of a planned state visit. Over the weekend, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed receiving numerous emails seeking to have the visit slated for March 18 to March 20, 2025, cancelled. After that the Royal House of the Netherlands confirmed they would honour a special invite by President William Ruto to visit Kenya. According to Dutch public broadcaster NOS, Kenyans, who have developed a knack of fiercely criticising Ruto\’s government, have strongly opposed the visit, citing the country\’s current state as one of the main reasons why Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima should stay away. \”Foreign Affairs confirms when asked, also on behalf of the RVD, that they have received at least three hundred e-mails about the royal visit to Kenya but do not yet have the full picture and are still investigating this,\”  a report from NOS stated. Many of the emails revolved around the violation of human rights in the country, particularly after the recent spate of abductions and disappearances of Kenyans who criticised the government before being reported missing. However, despite receiving the warnings from Kenyans on the planned visit, the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed the visit will still take place. Moreover, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking on behalf of the Government Information Service, noted that the visit would be the perfect opportunity to speak up on the issues at hand. \”In a written response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also on behalf of the Government Information Service, stated that it is aware of the human rights violations in Kenya, \”against which the Netherlands speaks out both publicly and is in contact with Kenyan authorities\” and that it sees the visit as an opportunity to \”discuss difficult topics such as human rights violations,\” the article from NOS read. The Dutch Royal Palace had earlier indicated that the key priority on the King\’s visit to Kenya is to foster new partnerships while cultivating already existing relationships.
