Learning activities have been suspended in Moi University following a prolonged lecturers strike. The management has however promised to resolve the challenges within the institution as soon as possible.  Moi University has been closed indefinitely over student unrest stemming from industrial action by the institution’s staff. In a statement released on Thursday, the University through the office of the Vice-chancellor, directed all students to leave the school premises with immediate effect.  “The University Senate in a Special Meeting held today Thursday 3rd October 2024 resolved to suspend the teaching and learning activities of the 1st Semester 2024/2025 Academic Year as a consequence of the industrial action of staff and subsequent student unease.’’ There has been tensions within the institution over the past few weeks as the staff in the University took industrial action in protest of poor working conditions. They accused the University’s management of exploiting them through third-party deductions from workers’ pay slips which did not reflect in their overall balances. “Moi University deducts pension and loans which do not reflect in the banks, we’ve been saying this for years and no action has been taken.” The management has however promised that learning in the university will resume as soon as possible.

High Court

High Court Stops The Implementation Of The New Higher Funding Education Model

The High Court has stopped the new funding education model  to be implemented. This comes as many university students have been trying to stop the implementation via protest. The High Court has recently stopped the implementation of the new higher education funding model until the case filed by the Kenya Right Commission and other three petitioners is heard and determined. According to a ruling made by Justice Chacha Mwita, the government led by Attorney General, Education CS and Kenya Universities and College Placement Service delayed in filing its submissions.  The petitioners led by the Elimu Bora Working Group and others argued that the funding model is discriminatory and locks thousands of students out of higher education. The petitioners had moved to court in October last year seeking orders to stop the implementation of the new university funding model. They argued that the new funding model will lock out many students from less privileged backgrounds from accessing university funds. According to the model segmented into 5 bands, students from vulnerable and extremely needy households would receive full funding while the less needy will get up to 90 per cent funding. This  comes as many university students across the country have been protesting calling for the new funding model to be scrapped.
