Meta Contractors Accused of Ignoring Threats to Moderators by Ethiopia Rebels
A contractor hired by Facebook’s parent company Meta has declined threats to content moderators by Ethiopian rebels. The Ethiopian rebels were angered by their works in reference to the new evidence filed in case challenging the disband of dozens of moderators in Kenya. 185 content moderators sued Meta and two contractors claiming they had lost their jobs with Sama last year. Sama is a Kenyan based firm contracted to moderate Facebook content for trying to organize a union. They added that they were also blacklisted from applying for the same roles at another firm, Marjorel, after Facebook changed contractors. Moderators focusing on Ethiopia said they were targeted by members of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) rebel group from removing their videos, but their complaints were dismissed by Sama. This was according to court documents filed on December 4th, Foxglove. They told us to stop removing their content from Facebook or else we would face dire consequences. One of the moderators said in his Affidavit. Court documents also stated that Meta had ignored advice from experts it hired to tackle hate speech in Ethiopia. The settlement talks between the moderators and Meta did not push on out of court in October last year.
