Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has declined a request by Nyadarua Senator John Methu for special sitting to tackle matters on abductions and forced disappearances of government critics across the country.
The Senate speaker on Tuesday 7th January referenced to Standing Order 33 (1) of the Senate which provides guidelines when the house can be convened for a special sitting.
According to the guidelines, only the Senate’s majority and minority leaders can write to Speaker Kingi requesting for a special sitting of the House.

And in each case with the support of at least fifteen Senators appoint a day for a special sitting of the Senate.
Speaker Amason Kingi said during the rejoinder.
From the foregoing, it is clear that your request does not meet the requirements set out in standing order 33(1) for the following reasons. A request for a special sitting should originate from the Senate Majority Leader or the Senate Minority leader. A request for a special meeting is to be supported by at least fifteen Senators.
He added.
Senator Methu had initially made a request on December 27th, 2024, requesting for a special parliamentary sitting regarding the rising cases of abduction which had become of concern nationwide.
