Deputy President Kithure Kindiki Challenges Judiciary in his First Remarks as DP

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has recently issued a subtle challenge to the Supreme Court in his first remarks since he was sworn in as the Deputy President. The DP was among those who attended the official opening of the Supreme Court of Kenya’s twelfth Jurisprudential Conference in Nairobi. The event which was presided over by President William Ruto, all eyes were on Kindiki as Kenyans at large waited to listen to the new DP’s first sentiments, since his swearing-in. He challenged the judiciary to find mechanisms to balance between public interest and the higher national interest. “Other than the parameters and the principles of the court help us to understand the public interest, are there other higher values and principles which are crucial to the existence of Kenya? Because the public can do the wrong things which threaten the existence of the state. That is the dead front of jurisprudence I want us to think about.” The new DP further admitted his sentiments had hints of bias since he was in the country’s security docket for two years, but insisted that there was a need for the courts to protect ‘higher interests’ while conducting their mandate. “I remember during the COVID-19 time, the Supreme Court made judgement more efficient even when locked down by this pandemic. Even after COVID-19, it is now certain that the way of the future is through virtual. The Supreme Court has done a good job.”  His sentiments came just days after his predecessor, ousted DP Rigathi Gachagua, was dealt the ultimate blow by the High Court, which cleared the path for the Interior CS’s swearing-in.

Starlink Suspends New Subscriptions To Its Internet Services In Nairobi and Surrounding Areas

Starlink has suspended new subscriptions to its internet services in Nairobi and surrounding areas following a network overload.  This comes after a number of users in the Nairobi metropolitan area complained of the company failing to provide residential, business, and ROAM service plans. In response, the tech company, founded by the world’s richest human Elon Musk, explained that it was overwhelmed with users and their bandwidth and could not support any additional customers. “Nairobi and neighbouring areas are currently at network capacity. This means that too many users are trying to access the Starlink service within Nairobi isn’t enough bandwidth to support additional residential or roaming customers at this time. No roaming plans are available in Kenya at this time. Starlink is working to restore service in the disrupted areas and a notification will be sent once the residential plan is back.’’ Other affected areas include Thika, Kajiado, Kiambu, parts of Murang’a, Naivasha, Ngong, Machakos and sections of Narok. The company moreover indicated that the affordable packages were out of stock and only those charging above Ksh 130,000 per month were available. In July 2023 Starlink entered into the Kenyan market with a promise of internet connection at low prices, a move that faced backlash in the market. As of August 2024, the package for residential homes in Kenya for unlimited high-speed, low-latency internet data was Ksh6,500 per month. The roaming package goes for Ksh14,000 per month and its features include unlimited mobile data inland, portability, and pause Service.

Lilian Achieng’ A Radio Presenter Found Dead Inside Boyfriend’s House In Nairobi

Police in Kahawa West, Kiambu County, are investigating another case of femicide where the body of a lady was found dead in her boyfriend’s house last week on Friday. According to the report, Lilian Achieng Aluko is suspected of having been brutally murdered by her boyfriend on Friday who later vanished.  The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect. The late was a presenter at Radio 44, a local radio station and was found dead at her boyfriend’s house with injuries on her face and a stab wound at the back.  She had informed her family on Thursday she would be spending the night at her boyfriend’s place, which would be the last time they saw her alive. “She left at around 11 am and told me she went to her friend. She did not return. On Friday, minutes to 9, I received a call from an unknown number informing her of her demise.”  According to a police report, Lilian was found with visible facial injuries and a stab wound behind her right ear. The report further discloses that the two had returned home after visiting a local entertainment joint. Soon after, neighbours reported hearing sounds of violent altercations but they were unable to intervene as the door was locked and the stereo volume was loud. A knife believed to be the murder weapon used in the gruesome act was recovered at the scene.  The family is now calling on the police to arrest the suspect, who remains at large.  Lilians incident becomes the latest incident in a troubling rise in femicide cases in the country.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Opposes President Ruto’s Tax Review Plans

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has recently opposed attempts by the government to introduce select proposals in the defunct finance bill 2024. Speaking during the 12th anniversary celebrations at the Dini ya Roho Mafuta Pole ya Africa in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, Kalonzo opposed the bid to review taxes noting that Kenyans are over-taxed.  According to him, the process was being engineered by Treasury CS John Mbadi. “Let us not lie to ourselves, we have a big challenge. If President Ruto’s government will re-introduce amendments to Finance Act 2024 and then add taxes, it will be hard for Kenyans.’’ His statement came as the government, in recent days, showed plans of reintroducing proposals in the 2024/2025 Finance Bill that will be making a return in the 2025/2026 Finance Bill. Kalonzo’s team further reminded the government of the anti-government protests in June when the country’s Gen Zs took to the streets to protest against the tax measures. “We used to say President Ruto has stuck on the tree, Gen Z pruned the branches. This time round, the tree will be uprooted with its root.’’ DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa also cautioned MPs against endorsing the proposals when they are presented in parliament. “Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi is planning to bring the amendments in Parliament and we ask our MPs to object to the bill. Since Kenya Kwanza assumed office, the only thing they have raised from the bottom to up is taxes.”

The president further noted that he will see to it that the police are empowered with the necessary resources to aid their operational framework in addressing the cases. ”We have a criminal problem and we have a moral problem, we need to address both of them. As government I want to promise you that we will go out of our way to provide resources for our police to deal with this challenge.’’ Ruto addressed the matter after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja requested him to address the plight of the hundreds of women who have ended up victims of the vice, which has in the last three months alone claimed the lives of 97 women. ”Your Excellency you are here, the women of Nairobi are crying, the women of our country are crying, let us give them security, let us also look into the affairs of our police and surveillance operations.’ According to the Head of State, the rise in the cases of violence against women was particularly to blame on moral and criminal issues, which he stated had been overlooked in the recent past. ”It is hurting our girls, it is hurting our families, we will work together and we are going to have a comprehensive program on how we are going to address this in a wholesome manner, so that we can deal with the criminal issues and apply our moral minds on how to deal with this.’’ Ruto also called upon parents and Kenyans to come together and aid the authorities in combating violence that has left many with injuries and in extreme cases, some ending up dead. ”Equally, as parents, starting with myself, as parents, as Kenyans, we must also deal with the moral issue. Let us not just finger-point as to who should do what, we should also begin by saying as a citizen what will I do to stop the menace.’’

Vera Sidika Advises Women Who Are Seeking To Undergo Cosmetic Surgery

Renowned Kenyan socialite Vera Sidika has recently addressed the tragic case of a Kenyan woman who died during cosmetic surgery at a clinic in Nairobi, urging women to be cautious.  Vera advised caution, noting that each case can vary significantly.  “The number of horror stories that come from that facility…what’s online is just the surface. I’ve heard stories. Crazy stories.” Vera did not forget to express her condolences to the woman’s family and stressed the importance of researching thoroughly before undergoing any procedure. “Please do your research very well before trusting anyone with your life. If you’ve got to do it, go for board-certified surgeons with a lot of experience,” she advised, adding that extensive experience is key for ensuring both safety and positive results. “I would even advise over 15 years’ experience, with thousands of surgeries performed successfully.” Vera was in the UK where she opted for facial fillers rather than cosmetic surgery, a detail that has caused some confusion. “By the way, I did not get cosmetic surgery on my face. Some people need exposure, fr. I got fillers—they are temporary, last nine months, then dissolve. Even with that, I had been doing research since September 2023. Not surgery—one full year of research before I went ahead.” She also shared snippets of her conversations with the clinic via direct messages, showing how they guided her to send photos and details before her visit.

Eugene Wamalwa Pulls Out of Azimio Coalition

Eugene Wamalwa has recently announced that his party, the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), would no longer be affiliated with the Azimio Coalition. “We are saying as DAP-K that we cannot and we no longer find it tenable to continue being in a relationship with people who are no longer like-minded with us, who have persistently aided and abetted Zakayo in reintroducing harsh taxes.” Wamalwa further noted that the collaboration of some of the coalition leaders with the ruling Kenya Kwanza Government that have made the coalition unpopular with the people as well as their support for Gachagua’s impeachment as the other reasons for this drastic action. According to him, the new broad-based Cabinet that includes his colleagues from the Orange Democratic Movement are aiding and abetting President William Ruto’s bad governance. “When John Mbadi brings those taxes, you will not say it is Ruto who has brought those taxes, you will say that Ruto has converted some of our colleagues in ODM to become Zakayos like him.” Wamalwa also stated that the party would immediately be embarking on a nationwide recruitment drive for candidates to vie in all the electoral seats in the upcoming 2027 election. “The party has also said that with all our chairmen from all our 47 counties, we will go back to each of the 47 counties to start an aggressive recruitment drive to prepare our party for the next elections. The DAP-K will be fielding candidates in all positions from MCA to MPs to Women Representatives to Governor to Senator to the President and yours truly has been given that honourous task of carrying the flag into the presidential race of August 10, 2027.” This decision follows months of the coalition principals calling out their leader, Raila Odinga since he made the decisive decision to align himself with the president, even letting four of his party members join the government they so often opposed.
