President William Ruto has made a new appointment to replace Millicent Omanga in the newly formed Nairobi Rivers Commission after she rejected the appointment. According to a gazette notice dated October 28, Ruto appointed Josephat Sagero to the position and announced the revocation of Millicent Omanga’s appointment. “In exercise of the powers conferred on me by the Constitution and the Laws of the Republic of Kenya, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Josephat Abaga Fan Sagero to be a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, for a term of three (3) years renewable once based on performance.The appointment of Omanga Millicent is revoked pursuant to section 51 of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.” Millicent Omanga had declined her appointment via a post on her social media, but promised to continue to support efforts aimed at rehabilitating Nairobi rivers. “I’m deeply honored and grateful to H.E Williams Ruto for the trust you’ve shown in appointing me to serve on the Nairobi Rivers Commission. It’s truly a privilege to be considered for such a vital role in improving our beloved Nairobi’s environment and public health. After careful consideration, I must respectfully decline the appointment due to personal reasons.I remain committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring Nairobi’s rivers & stand ready to contribute in any capacity that aligns with my current commitments. Thank you once again for this honour and for the consideration.” The newly formed commission is tasked with assessing the root cause of the challenges that faced the previous commissions to restore a safe, inclusive, and healthy environment for all Kenyans and unlock the socio-economic potential the rivers have. Members of the commission include; Mumo Musuva, Grace Senewa Mesopirr, John Kioli, Eva Muhia, Amos Chege Mugo, Carlotta Dalago, Rael Chebichii Lelei, Benjamin Langwen, and Charles Karisa Dadu. The commission also includes principal secretaries from several state departments including; Environment and Climate Change, Water and Sanitation, Internal Security and National Administration, Lands and Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development, and the National Treasury.
