US Criticises Kenyan Police for Disrupting Anti-Femicide Demonstrations

The United States has recently condemned the Kenyan National Police Service following Tuesday’s incident where anti-femicide demonstrators were allegedly attacked by police officers. According to the US government through its Embassy in Kenya, police officers violated the Kenyan Constitution on the right to peaceful demonstrations. The US Ambassador to Kenya Marc Dillard moreover termed occurrences as regrettable and concerning. Dillard further expressed the US government’s commitment to supporting stakeholders’ efforts to end the surging cases of femicide in Kenya and uphold human rights. “Regrettable and concerning to see police action against Kenyans exercising their constitutional rights to assemble and protest peacefully. On International Human Rights Day and every day, the United States supports efforts to end femicide and protect the human rights of all people,” Dillard noted. Dillard’s statement comes after the Law Society of Kenya jointly with other lobby groups including Amnesty Kenya raised concerns after the brutal treatment of anti-femicide demonstrators by alleged police officers in Nairobi.  In a statement the lobby groups faulted the police officers for their violent response against the peaceful protesters who were mostly women. “The excessive force and unwarranted arrests not only violate national and international human rights laws but also send a chilling message to all those advocating for justice and accountability. These actions undermine the rule of law and reinforce the impunity that perpetuates violence against women. We strongly condemn the use of teargas against unarmed citizens and the arrest of peaceful demonstrators.”

The report further indicates that a consignment of 83,000 bags of 25kg rice was ferried from the Kilindini port in Mombasa to Nairobi, where it was repacked and redistributed to several wholesale and retail outlets. The crackdown done only managed to seize 23,000 kg.  Market surveillance officers from KEBS confiscated the poisonous rice at the Central Business Park, located within Nairobi’s industrial area. However this is not the first time that Kenyans have found themselves consuming poisonous or even substandard commodities. Archbishop Ole Sapit voices concerns on reconstitution of IEBC

The Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has joined the opposition in voicing concerns about the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission which has dragged on for over two years. Ole Sapit warned that the country risks compromising the upcoming General Election if the issue is not quickly resolved. “We will need an IEBC that is completely prepared to handle the elections in good time for procurement purposes and make sure that we run an election by a team that has been trained well enough and in good time to be able to manage that process,” Archbishop Ole Sapit. The archbishop moreover noted that many Kenyans, especially new voters, need to be registered to exercise their constitutional right to vote in the 2027 polls.  “IEBC needs time to clean up the register. They need time to ensure unregistered Kenyans especially among the youth are registered.’’ According to him, the current state of affairs at IEBC amounts to a violation of voters’ rights and should be attended to urgently. “Having an absence of IEBC is a violation of the rights of Kenyans. Let us put the best interest of the country before our own and when we do that then Kenya will be a good place for all of us,” he noted. On the other hand, DP Kithure Kindiki has defended the government noting that the lack of a functional IEBC arose from a court injunction that halted the reconstitution of the Commission. The DP urged parties involved in the case over the reconstitution of the IEBC to reach an out-of-court settlement to facilitate the reconstitution of the electoral body. “I have seen some people blaming the government. This is a country governed by law. When there is an injunction, the government is not able to do anything,” the DP.
