Another Medical Intern Commits Suicide

The medical fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Francis Njuki, a medical intern doctor at the Thika Level Five Hospital. The late Njoki is alleged to have committed suicide on Tuesday after a long struggle with both mental and financial challenges. While confirming the incident, Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union Secretary General Davji Atellah accused the government of what he termed as negligence of health workers’ affairs. He noted that long working hours with little or no resting time coupled with meagre pay and sometimes delayed salaries could potentially drive one to end their life.  “Another doctor intern has tragically taken his own life this morning, a heartbreaking outcome of relentless workplace frustrations under a government that seems indifferent. Four months of working over 36-hour shifts without pay can break even the strongest among us. Our hearts ache as the medical fraternity mourns for our younger brothers and sisters,” he noted. This  incident comes barely two months after another intern doctor, Desree Moraa, a former medical officer at the Gatundu Level Five Hospital also committed suicide under unclear circumstances. According to a police report, the late Moraa’s body was reportedly found dangling from the rooftop of his bedroom’s balcony.

Malava MP Malulu Injendi Criticises Catholic Bishops for Rejecting Ruto’s Donation

Malava Member of Parliament Malulu Injend has  criticised the Catholic Bishop following the rejection of the Ksh 5.8 million donation from President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. Speaking during an interdenominational prayer in Kericho County, the MP called out the top brass of the Catholic Church in Kenya over the rejection of president  Ruto’s donation. The MP further asked for forgiveness from the President on behalf of the Church noting that it was a shame for the Nairobi Archdiocese leadership to reject the President’s donations. ”We were ashamed and I would like to appeal to our bishops that you cannot do what you did to the President. May God forgive and bless you,’’ Injendi stated. According to Malulu, it was not right for the Catholic Church to reject the donations from the President even though it still had a lot of financial needs and challenges  that it still had not addressed. ”As you can see, I have my rosary on and that means that I am a Catholic. Mr President, we have a lot of requirements and needs as Catholics including buildings and other things,’’ he added. He moreover alleged that the financial assistance that the Catholic Church used to get from its headquarters in Rome, Italy, had since stopped therefore making it hard for the believers to fundraise on their own. ”The help and assistance we used to get from abroad, we no longer do not get it. It is these believers who instead bear the brunt. We were surprised after taking you on a tour of our church, it is a shame that you sacrificed your salary only for our bishops to sit and do what they did,’’ the MP noted. This comes after the catholic bishop refused ruto’s and Sakaja’s donation which was done  during a church service on Sunday, November 17. Ruto had donated Ksh 600,000 to Soweto Catholic church in Nairobi for choir members and Ksh2 million that would have been used to construct a priest’s house. Ruto had also promised to donate an additional Ksh3 million that would be channeled to the church’s account to purchase a church bus. During the event, Governor Sakaja donated Ksh 200,000 to the same church. However, Bishop Philip Anyolo of the Nairobi Archdiocese later released a harsh-toned statement announcing that the donations would not be accepted. “These funds will be refunded to the respective donors. Furthermore, the promised additional Ksh3 million for the construction of the Fathers’ house and the donation of a parish bus by the President is now declined,” Bishop Anyolo.

The Catholic Church supports The Government In Its Fight Against Femicide

The Catholic Church has issued a statement supporting the government in its fight against femicide. Through the Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi Rev Simon Peter Kamomoe, the Catholics church weighed in on the menace, saying women should be protected. “In recent months, Kenya has witnessed a troubling pattern of women losing their lives in gruesome murders and under unclear circumstances. Such acts are not only a grave violation of human rights but also a deeply concerning trend that warrants urgent attention. While we support the government’s actions in addressing this menace, we, the Archdiocese of Nairobi, in collaboration with the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action call upon Christians and people of goodwill to act as our sister’s keeper.” Bishop Kamomoe noted that the society is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable members and women require protection and deserve to feel safe. “Taking personal responsibility to be ‘my sister’s keeper’ is a vital step in ensuring that the women around us- be they spouses, colleagues, family members, or friends- feel secure. We implore you to take the lead in safeguarding women in your midst. This act of care and protection is a reflection of our Christian values of love and respect for one another,” he asserted. The bishop moreover urged parents to keep a keen eye on their children amidst the long December holidays.  “We particularly urge parents to ensure the safety of their children, especially during the long holidays, when they may often be left alone at home,” the bishops stated.
