Government to Send Students Home in January Over SHA Registration

Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto, Moses Kuria has discoursed that learners must be registered with Social Health Authority (SHA) in order to be allowed to attend school next year. SHA is a program in Kenya that manages social health insurance and provides healthcare services to residents. It has three funds: the Primary Healthcare Fund, the Social Health Insurance Fund and the Emergency. SHA was established to replace the National Hospital Insurance Fund. Moses Kuria urged parents while speaking during a church service in Limuru that as they register for SHA, they should also include their children. He added that when learners leave home for school, they come under the care of the State, making the government responsible for their medical needs. Starting January, we are going to set aside all the records of children in schools. And for your child to be accepted back to school, you must have registered them for SHA. He spoke. This came after the Ministry of Education unveiled the 2025 academic year term dates for schools across the country. The government had announced that schools nationwide will reopen for the first term on January 6, 2025, and close on April 4 after 13 weeks of studies. Although the Ministry of Education has not issued any statements on the policy, the Ministry insisted that parents must register their children for the scheme in August. Over 14 million Kenyans have already been registered under the new scheme, including 8 million new registrations. 6 million Kenyans have managed to successfully transition from the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Nairobi County Government Reveals the cause of frequent floods in the city

The Nairobi County Government has revealed the cause of frequent floods in the city after rains left several parts of the city flooded with motorists and pedestrians also stranded on Friday evening. According to Nairobi Chief Officer of Environment Geoffrey Mosiria, the developers are to be blamed absolving the county government from all blame. He further noted that the flooding was due to construction of buildings on riparian land, with some blocking waterways. “What we are experiencing in Parklands is not about the drainage system but about developers building on riparian land. This problem can only be solved if the people of Parklands come together and we agree to demolish buildings on riparian land.” Parklands was among the most affected areas with photos showing sections of residential buildings, roads and pedestrian walkways flooded. Mosiria has also claimed that the county government had done its part. “As county government, we must tell each other the truth. When you go to social media to post about the floods bashing the county, I will also come here and bring you facts, the government is working, but people are building on riparian land.” He also noted that the solution lies in the demolition of buildings and structures erected on illegal spaces.     View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Whisper Wire (@whispers_wire1) Mosiria maintained that demolitions will open the waterways and allow for proper flow of water, saving residents from the nightmare of frequent floods. With videos and photos going around the social media, Residents have slammed the county government for doing little to address the chronic floods that have come to define Nairobi in recent days after heavy rains.

Clinical Officers Threaten To Go On a Strike if the government does not send home the board of SHA

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers has threatened to go on strike next month if the government does not send home the board of the Social Health Authority. The strike notice issued on November 29 makes this the second medical union to threaten this week. According to KUCO they will withdraw their services starting December 23, over what they term as discrimination in the rollout of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which is now rebranded to Taifa Care. KUCO claims that the top officials from the authority are to blame for the current crisis that has affected over six million Kenyans. “We shall down tools on the 23rd of December if the board does not rescind its decision, and we shall be holding demonstrations every Monday to protest this discrimination. The President has promised that the Universal Health Cover should work, but this can’t work in the manner that the Social Health Authority is carrying out the rollout.” KUCO National Chairperson Peterson Wachira further noted that the new SHA board had blocked clinicians from the list of service providers, yet they operate over 1,000 private facilities in the country.  The union is said to have over 30,000 members with duties ranging from administrative to performing clinical evaluations of patients. Wachira further warned that the health sector could collapse due to poor management by senior officers from SHA who had introduced a new funding model. Their strike threat comes a day after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union called on all intern doctors to withdraw their services over job frustrations, further threatening to demonstrate in December.

Kenyans Requested to submit proposals to aid in the development of JKIA

The government has requested Kenyans to submit alternative proposals to aid in the development of the country’s main airport JKIA a week after President William Ruto cancelled expansion deals. Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura urged Kenyans to bring forward proposals on how best to improve the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and electricity transmission in the country.  His comments came after President Ruto’s directive to cancel a deal to build a new power transmission and the end of negotiations for the expansion of the JKIA to be undertaken by the Adani Group. “We call upon Kenyans to come forward and bring alternatives to energy and airport building and see what we can do because we have to move forward,” he commented. Mwaura reiterated the cancellation of the contentious JKIA-KETRACO deals as he moved to quell any doubts regarding the move by the government. He further stated that Kenyans should not have doubts regarding the status of the deals, which had caused a great divide amongst the nation and many had called for their cancellation. He also added that Adani was not involved in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) that is under the Social Health Authority (SHA).  “There are cartels that are seeking to drag Adani everywhere. Adani is not in SHA. Those are just false stories,” he affirmed.
