LSK Challenges Ruto to make public all costs and losses incurred during the negotiations of the canceled deals with the Adani Group

The Law Society of Kenya has recently issued a fresh demand to President William Ruto, hours after the Head of State canceled the two Ksh 338 billion Adani Group deals.  The LSK is demanding Ruto to make public all costs and losses incurred during the negotiations of the canceled deals with the Adani Group. Through the body’s President, Faith Odhiambo, the body has welcomed President William Ruto’s move to cancel the deals after a public outcry.  However, the Society is demanding the government explain any public funds spent in pursuit of the two deals. “We welcome this presidential directive, which is in line with the will and best interests of the people of Kenya. While we prepared to prosecute both matters to a conclusion, we acknowledge that a concession on the part of the government regarding the overwhelming concerns around the two proposals is a more expeditious, reconciliatory, and people-driven approach toward resolving the protracted impasse between the people of Kenya and the government.” part of the statement. Odhiambo challenged the president to make the costs public to ensure accountability and transparency. “Further, we call upon the government to make public all costs and losses incurred and ensure that appropriate measures are undertaken to ensure minimisation of losses to the country,” the statement further read. The LSK’s demands come after Ruto cancelled two deals between Kenya and Adani group. President Ruto’s cancellation also came hours after Adani Group was charged with fraud in the US. The cancelled deals involved the Adani Group taking over Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where Adani was to renovate at a cost of Ksh 238 billion and manage the operations of the country’s largest airport for 30 years. Adani Energy Solutions, a subsidiary registered in Kenya, had also signed another Ksh 95 billion with KETRACO to build electricity transmission lines. Under the agreement signed in September, Adani would be in charge of the transmission lines for 30 years.

Ruto and Sakaja’s 5 Million Donation Rejected

The Catholic Church has rejected President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s Ksh 5.8 million donations to the Catholic church in Soweto.  The new turn of events comes as the fallout from the Catholic Bishop’s strong criticism of President Ruto last week continues to rattle feathers. The President had donated Ksh 600,000 to Soweto Catholic church in Nairobi on Sunday for choir members and Ksh2 million that would be used to construct the father’s house. The Head of State had also promised to donate an additional Ksh3 million that would be channeled to the church’s account to purchase a church bus.  During the same service also, Governor Sakaja had  donated Ksh 200,000 to the same church. Bishop Anyolo noted that the donations made by the two senior government officials contravened the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024 which states that any person who solicits or receives money or a benefit conducts a fundraising appeal regardless of whether the representation made was direct or indirect. According to the statement, the Catholic bishops have consistently maintained a firm stance on politicians donating money to churches, due to ethical concerns and the need to safeguard the church from being used for political purposes. The archbishop also accused a section of politicians of using church events such as fundraisers and gatherings as platforms for political self-promotion.  While declining the donations, Bishop Anyolo advised the Head of State to fulfil the demands made by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops including ending political wrangles, violations of human rights, the culture of lies, unfulfilled promises, and misplaced priorities. The decision to decline Ruto and Sakaja’s donations followed an uproar by a section of Kenyans who embarked on a campaign to apply pressure on the Soweto Catholic Church to return a Ksh 5.8 million gift.

Religious leaders from Nyanza region Threaten to Mobilize Kenyans for Mass Action

Religious leaders from the Nyanza region have threatened to mobilise Kenyans for civil disobedience over alleged oppression and mismanagement by President William Ruto’s administration. According to them, the country is headed in the wrong direction and called for the President to institute a raft of measures to address problems facing Kenyans, failure to which they will mobilise their supporters in civil unrest. “The nation has witnessed the worst cases of oppression in recent times, some orchestrated through commercialization of political leadership with the opposition voices virtually eclipsed in Nyanza region after the creation of the broad-based government,” The eight demands issued by the leaders are aimed to improve the livelihoods of Kenyans and Most of all the demands were also raised by the Catholic bishops. This comes a few days after the KCCB issued a statement criticising Ruto’s government over allegations of rampant corruption, over-taxation, and unkept promises. However after the KCCB statement the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) bishops called out their Catholic counterparts for publicly criticising the Kenya Kwanza Government on Thursday terming it as disrespectful. According to the ACK bishop, there were other means to articulate their grievances respectfully other than publicly attacking President Ruto. The Anglican Church, however, issued another statement on November 18, saying it fully supports the statement issued by Catholic bishops. Moreover the Atheists in Kenya on Monday also supported the Catholic church in calling out the government. They stated that the culture of lies was slowly replacing integrity.
