A section of ACK Clergy in Kilifi Call Out Catholic Bishops Over Government Criticism

A section of clergy in Kilifi County has recently called out their Catholic counterparts for publicly criticising ruto’s government. The ACK Bishop Reuben Katite stated that it was disrespectful of the bishops to bring up the matter publicly instead of sitting down with the President and talking it out. “Even religious leaders who know the Bible well stood and said they don’t think this government is chosen by God and they know very well that leadership comes from God. Instead of praying for the things that are going wrong to be corrected they choose to say that this government is not even chosen by God. How can that be?” Moreover the Political leaders at the occasion echoed these concerns including South Mugirango Member of Parliament Sylvanus Osoro who asked the religious leaders to remember to not just guide the congregants but also politicians as well He  encouraged them to correct when necessary. “Our leadership is worldly but yours comes from above and is for leading the soul. If we go wrong just correct us in a loving way.’’ This comes after the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops held a press conference where they criticised President Ruto’s administration over several issues plaguing the nation since he took over the top office. They also spoke of issues specifically affecting their sector including the hiking of the missionary work permit fees as well as the President’s refusal to take heed of their pleas. “We recall the pertinent issues we have raised recently with the government over taxation of Kenyans, the hiking of the missionary work permits, youth unemployment, and regulations of the education system including the Competency Bed Curriculum (CBC) and the education funding. This culture of lies, unkept promises, and misplaced priorities is unacceptable and needs to be dealt with. We believe that genuine consultations of all concerned stakeholders is necessary beyond the casualty of public participation.”

In response to a statement issued by the Catholic Bishops on November 14, with respect to recent abductions, IG Kanja has finally responded. The IG started his statement by disclosing that during the anti-government demonstrations, the country suffered massive losses. According to him, the losses ranged from death to destruction of property and livelihoods. He noted that NPS recorded 495 injuries to police officers, 347 injuries to civilians, and 42 civilian fatalities. “Following the public demonstrations that were witnessed in the country from june 18 to july 2024 against the proposed finance bill 2024, our country suffered massive losses ranging from death to destruction of property and livelihoods.NPS recorded 495 injuries to police officers, 347 injuries to civilians, 42 civilian fatalities and 69 cases of serious damage to government vehicles.” Talking on the matters related to femicide, Kanja noted that the police service had recorded 97 femicide deaths in the past three months.  According to the police boss, in most of the cases reported, the police service had already completed investigations, identified those involved in the murder of young girls and women, and arraigned them before the court. IG Kanja’s clarification comes a few hours after the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops criticised President William Ruto’s administration over allegations of rampant corruption, extrajudicial killings, over-taxation, and unkept promises. The bishops had stated that they were shocked by the government’s failure to resolve the recurrent cases of abductions, forced disappearances, and extra-judicial killings. They maintained that the decision by the government to remain silent on cases of abductions and murder particularly of young girls and women resulted in great consternation, anger, and disgust among Kenyans. “Many families are grappling with the loss of their children who were brutally killed and went missing following what is referred to as the Gen Z demonstrations in June 2024. Many of them had raised concerns about rampant corruption, who is behind these abductions?”

Anti-Femicide

Nationwide Anti-Femicide March Scheduled for December 10th this year

The ant- femicide march has been  planned for December 10 to demand an end to these killings as many  Kenyan women continue calling for urgent action against femicide. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, femicide is defined as the deliberate killing of women and girls due to gender-based reasons, including beliefs that prioritize male dominance, the enforcement of traditional gender roles, or punishment for perceived unacceptable behavior.  The European Institute for Gender Equality also describes femicide as the most extreme form of gender-based violence, rooted in societal power imbalances. In late October, few Kenyan human rights organizations issued a statement urging President Ruto to declare femicide a national crisis.  They called for a coordinated government response, noting a disturbing increase in brutal murders targeting women and girls. According to a DCI report, 94 women and girls were killed between 2021 and 2024, with 65 suspects charged in connection to these crimes. However, President Ruto has called on security agencies to intensify efforts to combat femicide.  “I know we’ve recently witnessed tragic incidents of our girls, mothers, and women being murdered in cold blood. The DCI and other investigative authorities must act decisively against these criminals.” He further urged society to be vigilant against individuals who prey on women and girls.

Meg Whitman has recently met a Kenyan top government official just a day after her resignation as the US ambassador to Kenya. Taking to her social media, Whitman revealed a meeting with Monica Juma, the National Security Adviser to President William Ruto. Whitman in her post thanked the security advisor and lauded her role as critical to the success of the diplomatic relations between the two nations. “Ambassador Monica Juma has been critical to the success of the United States and Kenya relationship in my time here. She is a true champion of Kenyan security and I will greatly miss working with her.’’ However, the details of the meeting remain unclear, with the post marking the first time Whitman has spoken up since her announcement on Wednesday that she had already submitted her resignation notice to President Biden. Her resignation came just a few days after Donald Trump won the US national elections. Kenyans who were unsatisfied with her relationship with the Kenya Kwanza Government had already started calling for her dismissal. The resentment towards Whitman boiled over following the deadly Gen Z protests in June with many Kenyans purporting that she had maintained silence on the extra-judicial killings and faulted her for colluding with the government

Iraq Proposes Law Allowing Marriages for Girls as Young as 9

Iraq’s Government has advanced to a closure of amending a law allowing girls as young as 9 years old to get married. This will lower the age of consent from 18 to 9. According to New York post, the Shia Conservative group that dominates Iraq’s parliament proposed an amendment to the country’s “personal status law” that could see a Taliban-style rollback of all women’s rights. This is a catastrophe for women. This law legalizes child rape. Faiq told the guardian. Faiq, among other female Iraqi representatives who were against the bill said that the chance would allow married off and put nearly all family decisions in the hands of religious authorities. The religious groups hold a large majority in parliament, this will create an uphill battle for Faiq and a group of 25 female representatives who are seeking to stop a second vote that would ratify the bill. Unfortunately, male MPs who support this law speak in a masculine way, asking, ‘What’s wrong with marrying a minor? Their thinking is narrow minded. Alia Nassif, an Iraq representative told the guardian. According to New York post, if the law passes, it will remove women’s right to divorce, child custody and inheritance yet the Shia coalition said repeatedly that the point of law is to protect girls from ‘immoral relationships’.
