Citizen TV Journalist Assaulted By a DCI Officer at DCI Headquarters

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has been criticised for allegedly assaulting Citizen TV  journalist Agnes Oloo during a live coverage.  In a recent video shared by Citizen TV, a man alleged  to be a DCI officer was captured openly harassing Agnes Oloo by trying to take away her camera. The video moreover depicted Agnes pleading with the detective, however, the adamant officer insisted on his pursuit before chasing away the journalist. It is alleged that Oloo was confronted while preparing to record the summoning of Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thangwa who was scheduled to appear at the DCI offices to detail a recent incident where goons disrupted a funeral attended by Rigathi Gachagua. It was during the coverage that the DCI officers confronted Oloo and harassed her. The reporter however momentarily retreated before proceeding to capture the events from a distance. “The incident occurred this morning at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road…we had gone to record the summoning of Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thangwa. Moments later we were approached by DCI officers who assaulted my colleague Agnes Oloo. They wanted to take away her equipment. They sent us away but we decided to capture the event from a distance to avoid further confrontations.’’ This incident is part of a worrying trend that has been building since June this year when several journalists were attacked by police officers while covering the anti-government protests. On July 16th this year, a K24 journalist was allegedly shot by police officers while covering demonstrations in Nakuru County. During the same period, a number of journalists in Nairobi almost suffered a similar fate as police officers allegedly fired tear gas canisters to stop them from covering the demonstrations.
