Gachagua joins MPs in calling for an independent inquiry into abductions and extra-judicial killings

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has encouraged a push by a coalition of Kenyan leaders for the establishment of an Independent Public Commission of Inquiry. The commission would investigate the trend of abductions, extra-judicial killings, resurgence of criminal gangs, and allegations of state capture. The move follows growing concerns over escalating human rights violations and the erosion of democratic values. “The abductions and extra-judicial killings that have been happening are clearly state-sanctioned,” he said The former DP went on to state his alignment with calls for an independent commission to address gross human rights violations, ensure justice for victims, and prevent future occurrences.   His comment follows a press statement released by the coalition detailing the alarming frequency of abductions targeting critics of the government and other vulnerable groups.  In the statement, the leaders also raised concerns about the lack of accountability within security agencies.  They also want Parliament to convene special sessions in the National Assembly, Senate, and county assemblies to discuss the abductions and adopt necessary policies. However, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Inspector General of Police have distanced themselves from responsibility, citing ignorance of those involved.

KHRC Calls For Resignations Of DP Kithure Kindiki, Ichung’wah Over Alleged Abductions

Kenya Human rights Commission (KHRC) has sought for the resignation of several Kenyan leaders over alleged endorsement abductions in the country. The leaders included Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah. The abductions escalated in June 2024 when youth started protesting on Finance Bill 2024 that they didn’t want to be implemented due to high cost of living. Recently, KNHCR reported that 82 youths had been abducted since June with 29 still missing. On Monday 6th January 2024, five out of the six youths who were abducted in December were reportedly released. Most of them had shared satirical images of President William Ruto or linked to those who issued the photos. What they said that prompted resignation according to KHRC Kimani Ichung’wah, the majority leader in the National Assembly supported false claims by Francis Atwoli that abductees were faking their abductions for financial gain. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said that government would resort to brutal tactics to firmly deal with youthful critics, blaming their behavior on ‘lack of parental guidance’. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen stated that no abductions and extra judicial killings were happening under Ruto’s watch. This he spoke in Bungoma on December 27th. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki justified the use of excessive force by police against unarmed protesters, leading to deaths and abductions. He made remarks during his appearance before the National Assembly’s security and administration committee. KHRC claimed that those comments violated the constitution. KHRC therefore stated that they call for an impartial and through investigation into their statements and potential involvement in the abductions and extra judicial killings of state critics. Those found culpable must face prosecution and be permanently barred from holding state or public office.

Senator Methu Calls For Emergency Parliamentary Sessions Over Surge In Abductions

Nyandarua Senator Muhia Methu has Speaker Kingi to convene special sitting over rising abductions. In a letter dated 27th December 2024, the Nyandarua Senator wished to request approval of Senator Kingi for a special sitting of the Senate to deliberate on a matter of critical national importance ‘abductions’. The abductions matter raised deep national concern as it infringed on the fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in the constitution including the freedom of expression, association and the right to life and security. Alarmingly, admissions by the Kenya Police service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have raised growing concerns of the existence of an organized criminal syndicate operating outside the command of the Inspector General. This syndicate appears to target and silence critics of the current administration.  Methu stated. Methu added that the Senate must take necessary steps to demand immediate action by the Government to stop these illegal and unconstitutional practices. Given the urgency and gravity of this matter, I request you to convene this special sitting to debate and adopt actionable recommendations to safeguard the rights and freedom of all Kenyans. The Nyandarua Senator further stated. Parliament cannot just keep quiet on the National debate of #stopabduction . I’ve written to Speaker Rt. @HonAmasonKingi to reconvene the Senate to dig into this matter. The President – It’s not me. The police – It’s not us. Choir Master Ichung’wah- It’s not me. pic.twitter.com/xjCr5XsNDY — Sen. Methu Muhia (@methumuhia) January 6, 2025

Okiya Omtatah expresses frustrations after being denied entry to the DCI Headquarters

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has expressed his frustrations after being denied entry to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters. The activist has accused the detectives of barring him from entering while following up on a colleague’s Certificate of Good Conduct, which he claimed had taken an unreasonably long time to be issued. According to Omtatah, all public institutions are mandated to serve all citizens with transparency, accountability, and fairness. He argued that denying people access to such services undermines public trust. “I am deeply concerned and disheartened by an incident that transpired today at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters on Kiambu Road, where I have been denied entry while seeking to urgently follow up on a Certificate of Good Conduct for a colleague. This certificate, often required for employment and other critical purposes, is a fundamental public service that must be accessible to all Kenyans without unnecessary barriers.”  The senator moreover called on the DCI officers to immediately review and streamline entry protocols to ensure that urgent cases are treated with the seriousness they deserve. He also urged the detectives to establish a clear, transparent, and accessible complaints mechanism for those who encounter challenges when seeking services.   Omtatah did not forget to urged the DCI to ensure that all its officers at public service points uphold professionalism, respect, and courtesy towards citizens.

DP Kindiki warns Leaders who take his soft-spoken character for granted

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has recently sent a stern warning to leaders who take his quietness, restraint, and soft-spoken character for granted. Speaking during a Thanksgiving service in Embu, the second in command revealed that although he may remain quiet mostly, he was focused on delivering the promises of Kenya Kwanza to Kenyans and that he should be respected. “I don’t talk much, that is who I am, sometimes people look at me and wonder how I got here because of how quiet I am. They look at how I speak and think that I am timid, but that’s not the case. Leadership is not about arrogance, voice, and other things, leadership is about delivering, so let us respect each other here. There is a difference between leadership and populism,” the DP stated. He went on to point out how he was taken for granted when he was the Interior CS and people undermined his capabilities of stemming crime, further revealing that he was not going to change his character and make noise. “They kept on saying I couldn’t deal with bandits in Kerio Valley, but today, there is peace in Kerio Valley due to the work I did there. If you have anger issues, don’t bring it to leadership, please, let’s respect each other. I repeat, let’s respect each other. I have given you all the respect, but you must also respect me,” the DP warned. Kindiki moreover challenged the leaders who have been criticizing the government to remain quiet if they could not offer solutions to the issues they condemned.

Gachagua Accuses the Government of Involvement in Renewed Mungiki Activities in Mt Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has directed Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia to file a petition calling for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the government over the alleged use of the outlawed Mungiki faction. Speaking during a church service at Guardian Angel Tetu Catholic Church in Nyeri County Gachagua alleged that the government, through Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, is covertly sponsoring the outlawed group with the intent to cause havoc among the people of Mt Kenya. ”The ICC should not wait until crimes against humanity have been committed. This gang is known to have committed crimes against humanity. ‘Why can’t the police instead of giving protection to that criminal gang as directed by the Deputy President deal with the alcohol issue?”  He further directed his ally, Kaguchia, to document all the crimes committed by the Mungiki sect in the earlier years and forward the same to the court. ”Hon Kaguchia, you must get a team and document all the crimes that were committed by that team of outlawed sects in the 1990s because those were crimes against humanity and start engaging the ICC,”Gachagua directed. With no doubt, Gachagua was relating to the December 31 political rally, led by the controversial pastor and political leader Maina Njenga.  During the meeting, Njenga, who has in the past been linked with Mungiki publicly revealed that he was supporting president William Ruto.  Njenga further introduced what he termed the Kabiruini Declaration, which commits young people in the region to work alongside the current government.
